My Florida Solo with Backtracks 2 Month Winter Adventure

A couple years ago I left the harsh Minnesota winter and did two months performing solo with backing tracks in Florida. I did Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly and Elton John 2 or 3 hour shows in bars, wineries, a brewery in Boca Raton, an old opera house in Arcadia, FL and one at an auto museum in Sarasota. I camped in my van at a state park on Tampa Bay that was super cool, right on the big water right off my site… tropical birds hangin around for lunch snack scraps, lol! It was very inexpensive to camp. I was able to jaunt down to Key west as a tourist in between gigs, did not find gigs there… But also visited tons of MN friends that snowbird in Florida during the winter. I also camped at Walmart and Cracker Barrel lost here and there while in between gigs.

Most days I’d spent at coffee shops promoting my gigs online and trying to book more. On my non show days I’d usually spend dinner time until 9 or 10pm kicking back at beach park lots, back van doors open, watching people fish or surf, then I’d head to where I was crashing for the night and watch Netflix, lol. I’d be up at dawn and when not a campground, I’d walk the beach with my Starbucks coffee, then hit the public beach showers - when not a campgrounds that have showers. I’m rigging up a van shower set up, too for this season. Many Legions, VFWs, Moose Lodges etc., fraternal orgs have live music, solos duos as do beach bars in Florida and other gulf states. Are you a Florida musician that wants to swap me even more info for MN info? Let me know! I enjoyed the gulf side better than the east coast. More Midwesterners stay gulf side, maybe that’s why, my normal kinda peeps. But I did enjoy the other side. My main motivation was, get out of winter, Minnesota to hot Florida. One night it was 30 degrees when I was chillin at my campsite! FYI, it’s not always steaming in the south during winter time!
