Built in 1927 at 3022 Hennepin Avenue, the Granada Theater is an iconic Uptown landmark. Designed by architectural firm Liebenberg and Kaplan in the ornate Spanish Churrigueresque style, it was Minneapolis’s first "atmospheric" theater, famous for its domed ceiling that twinkled with a starry night sky and floating clouds

The 800 capacity theatre was reported have cost $250,000 and opened in late September 1928 with a screening of Glorious Betsy (1928) starring Dolores Costello and Conrad Nagel.

The theatre was equipped with Vitaphone and Movietone sound systems, and thus no provision was made for an orchestra or theatre organ. At its opening the theatre was operated by the Northwest Theaters circuit, managed by Mr Gordon Greene.

The venue made history as the first neighborhood theater in the city to screen "talkies" with sound. Originally opening as the Granada, it was later renamed the Suburban World Theater in 1954 before closing and falling vacant. Following a massive restoration, the space was revitalized in 2019 to host live concerts, weddings, and private events, while also featuring an on-site restaurant and Uptown Lobby Bar.
