Hey fellow tour loving singers + bands, let’s collaborate.

GET A ROOM?

Let’s share venue and lodging information about our favorite places, stops, venues, accommodations, camp grounds, etc… Help ya GET A ROOM to gig here, and GET A ROOM to crash there - and vice versa.

I recently traveled to Dallas from Minneapolis and Facebook found me an amazing guitarist to fill in a week before playing an outdoor festival as “David K’s Rockabilly Roadshow.” We also luckily were invited to park our sprinter camper van at a high school pal’s ranch. Perfect trip, had a blast, show went great, saved money, so everybody won. Got me to thinkin’ - I LOVE to perform everywhere and anywhere and love the adventure and the people, as much as the music. Why not build a collective of new friends collaborating to expand venues to play, places to stay, cool stuff to see and do, and cool new people to meet?

I want us, the Entertainment community to share stuff something like this…

I perform solo piano, guitar, vocal and as well, duo, trio - classic rock, pop, soul, and 4-6 pieces doing tribute shows. Costumed up or not as Roy Orbison, Elton, Buddy Holly, and we do a tribute to rockabilly, “David K’s Rockabilly Roadshow” a tribute to the early greatest; Roy, Elvis, Cash, Chuck, Jerry Lee, Little Richard etc.

I’ve played piano bars, pubs, wineries, fine dining establishments solo etc., and we can share Opera houses, Community Theaters, Performing Arts Centers that we do our tribute shows at, in Minnesota and Iowa, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin mostly and some random venues in TN, IL, WY, CO…

I have email lists of Minnesota wineries, breweries, distilleries and cideries and lists of venues in the northland.

MAN SINGING IN EAGLE BEAK MASK ON HIDDEN SHORELINE!

This post is a message I sent David K my tribute guy friend from Minnesota. I now live in Arizona. I met a unique character, Tavo. I was fly fishing in Montana camped on BLM (bureau of land management) land. Tavo plays college gigs wearing a bald eagle costume head. Singing through the beak. traveling with his deaf dog and a guitar, he camps and books gigs nationwide in his old motorhome.

Oldies But Goodies: Playing the Senior Circuit

Some musicians pooh-pooh the idea of playing for older people; like it’s unhip compared to, say,  a room full of drunks screaming for “Free Bird” or something.  I’ve been doing it for 16 years, and consider it more than fine.

Lonely Blue Dreams, a song sent to me in the night by Roy Orbison

Believe me? Well… let me tell you! We had been performing tons of shows and then lockdown happened. All I did at home was rehearse thinking it’d be over sooner than it was. I’d wake in the middle of the night to get up and go to the restroom, and Roy Orbison was in my head. One night he’d be singing, “Pretty Woman… walkin down the street…” One night I’d wake and it was “Crying, over you…” I’d tell Roy, “Stop it Roy, I’ve gotta get some sleep.” One night I woke to a melody, words were coming out of my mouth as I woke up, and I started to chastise Roy, and then I realized, “This isn’t a Roy song. What is this song?”

THE CROWD SELFIE

I’m a big fan of Kacey Chambers, an Australian singer songwriter who wrote huge hit called, NOT PRETTY ENOUGH and that debut album was amazing. She may have been blown away by fame and the critical acclaim, so she took a break and never really reached her rocket momentum again, though she still tours the world and still writes great songs. I noticed she’d take selfies with their crowds, and I thought it was the cutest cool thing… so we started ding it.

The Abiders, band intro

THE ABIDERS (Twin Cities, MN) put on an unforgettable show of Americana music with something for everyone - originals and classic blues, country, some folksy stuff too. These musicians have a groove - some special kind of chemistry - that sets their sound apart from the rest and connects with audiences. Whether bangin’ out their originals, gritty ol’ blues or back-hill country, The Abiders deliver their own kind of music full of heart and soul. If it ain’t fun, we ain’t doin’ it!

Road Trips & Speed Traps,

As a lifelong author and musician, I’ve road-tripped for about 30 years. The overwhelming majority of out-of-town excursions have been delightful: Frequently playing lovely venues, meeting friendly folks, as often as not savoring scrumptious local scenery or cuisine. The next level down is a much smaller collection of subpar performances, people in dirtball towns with unrealistic expectations, and Cheez-It dining in my car enroute to the venue because there’s no time for anything else.

Novice to Retired Business Man now Touring Guitarist

I started playing guitar in 4th grade from a place in Hopkins, MN called Bud’s Music Center. I learned chords but had no idea how they all fit together to create a song. In High School, I would play three chord progressions for the local youth group but really just for fun. In college, I would mess around with a buddy that knew a lot of songs and enjoyed playing with someone else, but put it down upon graduation and didn’t pick it up again until my mid-thirties. I lived in Stockholm, Sweden for several years and MTV was big at the time. I saw a video of Eric Clapton on stage with a bunch of guitars and a cup of coffee playing this beautiful tribute to his lost son, Tears In Heaven. The next day, I bought an Ovation guitar and started taking lessons again for the first time in thirty years… I have since built a nice music room with new gear. I bought most of my stuff from Sweetwater, Guitar Center and Stevie’s Guitars. If you play like me and are interested in how a guy with my capabilities ends up playing in a band later in life, feel free to reach out

VAN LIFE Touring and Saving Lodging Money

If you just logically look at the costs of taking a 4 piece band on the road, of course you can split costs in 1/2 if you double up and share hotel rooms. You could also sleep 4 people in one room, but not everyone wants that…

My Florida Solo with Backtracks 2 Month Winter Adventure

A couple years ago I left the harsh Minnesota winter and did two months performing solo with backing tracks in Florida. I did Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly and Elton John 2 or 3 hour shows in bars, wineries, a brewery in Boca Raton, an old opera house in Arcadia, FL and one at an auto museum in Sarasota. I camped…

Gigs at Wineries, Orchards, Breweries, Distilleries, Cideries

The good thing is, you get to perform for a wider variety of age groups, families etc. which can be charming - When doing the solo background to enjoying the day, and people drinking. But the bad thing is, sometimes not all people pay attention and kids can be screaming and running around. Oh well, goes with that territory. Doing the band show thing. If it’s a ticketed show…
