Believe me? Well… let me tell you! We had been performing tons of shows and then lockdown happened. All I did at home was rehearse thinking it’d be over sooner than it was. I’d wake in the middle of the night to get up and go to the restroom, and Roy Orbison was in my head. One night he’d be singing, “Pretty Woman… walkin down the street…” One night I’d wake and it was “Crying, over you…” I’d tell Roy, “Stop it Roy, I’ve gotta get some sleep.” One night I woke to a melody, words were coming out of my mouth as I woke up, and I started to chastise Roy, and then I realized, “This isn’t a Roy song. What is this song?” Then I realized I’d been writing the song in my dreams. I’d fully finished the tune. I was able to sit up, write down the lyrics front to back and 100% capture the finished song that was in my dream. I took video of my hands playing it so that I’d remember the chords and style. Then I went back to sleep. 6 hours later I’d forgotten and woke up to the tune. It took me a few minutes to realize that I hadn’t dreamed the whole thing! I’d either written a hit song in my dreams , I thought - because I actually loved the tune… OR Roy Orbison sent it to me. I wanna believe, of course, the later. Over the following weeks and months I’d dream more songs, which became an album of the same name. The album also held 5 Roy hits which I gained licensing to, and 7 dreamed songs, as well as one more tune… I’d remembered, 6 months later we’d begun doing the shows, that I’d had an encounter with Roy’s manager in LA back in 1992, 3 or 4 years after Roy had died. I got into a little airport rental car van carrying my guitar, alone… Then at the next stop a man got in carrying a brief case. He asked, “Are you a songwriter, son?” I said, “Why yes I am, Sir.” He said, “Send me a song.” I asked him what he did for CBS Records, Japan. He replied, “I do a lot of things but mostly I handle Roy Orbison’s catalogue for his widow Barbara. I freaked out on the inside, and replied, “Sir, I will go home tonight and write you a Roy Orbison style song and send it to you right away.” Which I did. It’s called, It Was A Mistake. At shows I dedicate it to my 3 ex wives.
